Role of play for a preschooler

Play is vital for preschoolers Children are playful by nature. As they grow up, they play with themselves and later they develop the habit of playing with other children. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) has stated that “When kids are learning and playing with joy, then it’s a positive experience. They develop a positive approach to learning.”

The teacher’s role as children grow

If we discuss the role of play in a 2 year old child, he has started going to a preschool which is totally a new environment and every child needs time to settle. So, at this stage, a child plays by himself. But as they start enjoying their school, they become friendly to other and start interaction with others.

At the age of 3 years, a preschooler starts to play with other children, as they share similar interests. A teacher can facilitate this process by helping children find the words to express their needs.

Between 4 and 5 years, children start sharing similar interests and look for kids who have hobbies like them. They discuss and plan to create play scenes, take turns and work together in a group.

The role of a teacher is very crucial in the development of play by using her curriculum in a way that guides her to plan for how the children are going to be engaged in play. It really is a fun filled way of learning for kids.

Types of play

The different ways of play are mentioned below:-

  • Dramatic — A drama or a skit is presented by dressing up in costumes, assuming roles as characters, using toys to represent characters in stories, creating imaginary settings, and pretending to take on the roles of adults.
  • Manipulative — Playing with small toys often used to build objects but also found in puzzles, characters, beads, blocks etc.
  • Physical — Using the different body parts in activities like balls, jump ropes, hoops etc.
  • Creative — Using art materials such as paint, clay, markers, pencils, glue, etc.

So all these types of play can be included while framing the curriculum as it make it enjoyable for the kids to learn and retain for a longer time. As a result of which the child comes up with a positive approach towards learning, school and his/her peer group.
