What is Circle Time?

It is a designated time period for young children which is important for their social interactions. It helps in building positive relationships among the children by engaging them in fun activities. It also addresses certain issues like that of too much noise or talking during the classes. The activities keep the keeps engaged. It is the responsibility of the teacher to make sure that each child is given an equal opportunity to participate and to be involved. Children are usually seated in a circle- on floors or on chairs, whatever is required and available. They pass an object around the circle to decide whose chance it is to speak. The activities can include musical games, talking and listening activities, drama and so on.

Circle time acts as a tool not just for the children to interact with each other but also a tool for the teachers and the children to connect. The children in primary schools haven’t yet developed social, emotional or communicational skills. This designated time helps them in doing so. Usually, the whole class has to participate with their teacher acting as a moderator. The form of the circle also encourages skills like unity, working together, respecting each other and working towards a common goal. The key five skills on which circle time works are: concentrating, speaking, listening, thinking and looking.

Benefits of Circle Time:

1.Socialization:

The opportunity to socialize is one of the core benefits that can be derived from Circle time activities. They are perfectly designed for the children to interact equally with the other children as well as the adults. They get to explore themselves better as they get to relate with their fellow classmates as well as their teachers. It helps in nurturing their social skills early. It prepares them for further studies in Kindergarten and their elementary school as well. It will also impact their future academic and professional performance positively.

2.Listening Skills:

The kids have to listen to their peers as well as their teachers during circle time and
everyone gets a turn to lead the games further. This part of the activities helps them in developing their listening and communication skills. The children learn to overcome the shyness and how to express themselves in a public setting. They also develop an attitude to respect their teachers as well as their peers. The children learn the concept of boundaries and not to interrupt when someone else is speaking. Learning about all of this at a young age is healthy for young children.

3.Readiness for School:

The children have to take turns during Circle time. It develops a sense of patience and understanding among them. The two tools that the children will need as and when they grow up, especially during their school life. This time also helps them in making aware of their sensory, physical and language experiences with the exposure to new songs, materials, dances and more stimuli.

4.Fine and Gross motor skills:

By participating in Circle time activities children develop good Gross motor skills like turning and jumping, by participating in dancing. It helps them in coordination, counting and as well as rhythm. It also helps in developing dexterity and agility (especially physical activities). An added bonus is that the exercises are in the form of fun! So, the children can learn without taking it as a burden.

5.Parent Modeling and Bonding:

If and when the parents participate in the activities, it has its own benefits attached to all the other benefits. When children get to copy their parents or work with their parents, they feel mature and responsible as well. It is also more fun for them because of increased excitement. Circle time is also an opportunity for the parents to be role models for their children and to execute the activities in a way that will benefit their children. The enthusiastic participation of the parents is hence, a necessity. The bond between the parents and their kids also gets stronger when they get to interact in a different and modeled environment that is not their home. The introduction to new songs and dances is also a benefit because they can become a part of the family’s routine.

6.Increased motivation for school:

Children love to do activities that aren’t studying. Especially the pre-school kids love to play games. Circle time hence gives the children the motivation to go to school. They feel excited about it. The anticipation of doing something new every day and playing those interactive games at school will keep the children away from crying for getting up in the morning for school. They will instead look forward to it.

7.Good practice of a routine:

Engaging in Circle time on a daily basis introduces the concept of routine and time to the children. Once they are familiar with the activities, they can also learn to do them at home at fixed times. It helps in making children punctual and disciplined. Apart from these core benefits, Circle time also helps in a few areas of development for the children. Following are the skills that can be developed by the same:

8.Language Development:

A wonderful way to teach children about language is by reading to them on a daily basis. It will also develop in them an interest to read more and maybe love for books. It will help them learn new words, develop comprehension and prediction skills and will also help them in exploring the sounds and rhythms of language. Apart from this, Circle time also gives a window for good communication and hence, better verbal skills for the children.

9.Cognitive Development:

Circle time is a great time to teach children group-solving situations. The children can be guided to discuss their problems and to try to come down to a common solution that benefits everyone equally. They also learn some scientific facts when asked to observe animals, weather and plants. They can also be taken for nature walks for the same. Circle activities can also include reflecting on the activities that were done in the past. This will not only induce a kind of feedback from the children but also test their interest in the activities as well as their memorizing ability.

Keeping all of the above in mind, it becomes really important to conduct Circle time in the preschools. The activities not only create a better bond between the teachers and the students but also a better bond between the parents and their children. It helps in developing a healthy environment both at home as well as at school. The children don’t resent going to school and reach there with a fresh mood to learn. They are also more focused the whole day on learning if they have a good and exciting start in the morning itself.

The activities conducted also help in developing the communicational skills of the children which are the most useful when they join school or go out in the real world to interact with different people. It teaches the children to respect other people and listen to them properly.
